There are those of us who Halloween and those of us who don’t. If you’re one of the ones who do, chances are you’ve already thought about your costume, the parties, and your top scary movies to make non-Halloween-loving friends suffer through.

EQUITY Q&A with producer/actress Alysia Reiner and director Meera Menon

July 27, 2016

The phrase “this is a man’s world” has become a harsh reality for many women. When producer/actress Alysia Reiner (Orange is the New Black) and director Meera Menon discovered unsettling statistics on gender inequality in the workplace, they drew parallels to their own profession and were inspired to tell a story in a genre traditionally dominated by men. Enter, EQUITY.

Set on Wall Street, EQUITY tells the story of an executive (Anna Gunn, Breaking Bad) who finds herself tangled in a web of deception and office politics as she fights for the opportunity to take a start-up public. But when an employee raises questions, Naomi must decide whether to investigate rumors that may compromise the deal or push forward with the confidence her superiors expect. As the IPO draws closer, Naomi sees that her career choices have left her very much alone. Forced to reexamine the cutthroat world she loves, she finds herself in a fight for her very survival.

Despite the immense progress in workplace equality signaled by US Presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, Academy Award winner Kathryn Bigelow, and many more, there’s still much to discuss. That’s exactly the type of conversation Reiner and Menon wanted to spark when they stopped by the Angelika Dallas to discuss the film.

Watch the trailer below!

EQUITY opens July 29th at Angelika New York and August 12th in Dallas, Plano, Fairfax, and San Diego.

WIENER-DOG – Q&A with director Todd Solondz

June 29, 2016

Todd Solondz says there’s only two things he’s concerned about when making a film: 1) that he isn’t embarrassed by it, and 2) that he survives it. While he managed to check off the first thing during the production of WIENER-DOG, the second was a bit challenging.

Over the weekend, the director of HAPPINESS and WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE stopped by the Angelika Film Center to discuss his latest dark comedy. WIENER-DOG chronicles the life of a dachshund, after it is taken in by veterinary technician Dawn Wiener (Greta Gerwig), who sets off on a road trip. Along the way, the lovable dog encounters a young boy, a film professor, and a troubled grandmother and granddaughter, spreading comfort and joy to all.

While Solondz is very particular about the characters he selects for his films, the cute little furry WIENER-DOG star(s) proved to be a bit of a “nightmare” as he put it. However, Solondz’s challenges with the four legged actor(s) went unnoticed as he went on to design a film for theater, which is always the director’s main goal. During the Q&A Solondz discusses his past controversial work, the changing tide of the film industry, and being a film school dropout-turned-professor at NYU.

WIENER-DOG is now playing at the Angelika New York and opens this Friday 7/1 at Angelika Dallas, Angelika Plano, Angelika Carmel Mountain!

My Love Don’t Cross That River

June 20, 2016

In an era where love is hard to find and relationships are fleeting, MY LOVE DON’T CROSS THAT RIVER reminds us of how remarkable life-long companionship actually is.

The twilight days of lovebirds Byong-man Jo and Gye-Yeul Kang are captured by fly-on-the-wall director Moyoung Jin, in an unforgettable story of true love that transcends both generations and cultures. After 76 years of companionship, the couple remains inseparable; living in their small home by the river, they wear traditional Korean clothes, go shopping at the local market, have picnics with neighbors, and enjoy dance parties. Every night they go to sleep holding hands, and their tender moments reveal simple acts of affection – from a good-natured leaf fight to a gentle caress of the cheek.

Now Playing – Art Bastard

June 17, 2016

ART BASTARD is the story of the audacious independent New York artist Robert Cenedella. Although at the time Cenedella was not as widely celebrated as his pop-art contemporaries like Andy Warhol, Cenedella still managed to make a lasting impression in the art world.

“You can bastardize everything else in your life, but if you compromise with your art, why be an artist?”  – Robert Cenedella

This close-up exploration follows Cenedella’s artistic journey as he struggles towards creative expression.  ART BASTARD raises questions on art’s value and its relationship to society. In portraying Cenedella’s determination to buck the system of what is popular, while critiquing that popularity in his attempt to turn the art world upside down, ART BASTARD is a funny, touching, and insightful look inside the maverick mind of a true original.

Maggie’s Plan – Interview with Writer & Director Rebecca Miller

June 3, 2016

MAGGIE’S PLAN might just be the romantic comedy you didn’t know you needed to see. In this candid interview with filmmaker Rebecca Miller, we get the inside scoop on Miller’s creative process for developing each of the film’s characters. Miller shares what it was like to work closely with the actors and creative team to determine every rich detail about the characters – from their job to their personal style. She even shared her ideas about the taste of the elusive (but tasty) Bavarian Pickle! How’s that for details? Check out the  interview below!

In Rebecca Miller’s witty, modern romantic comedy MAGGIE’S PLAN, Greta Gerwig portrays Maggie Hardin, a vibrant and practical thirty-something New Yorker who, without success in finding love, decides to have a child on her own. But when she meets anthropoligist John Harding (Ethan Hawke), Maggie falls in love and immediately adjusts her plans for motherhood. Complicating matters, John is in a strained marriage to brilliant academic Georgette Nørgaard (Julianne Moore). With a Greek chorus of Maggie’s eccentric best friends Tony (Bill Hader) and Felicia (Maya Rudolph), Maggie sets into motion a new plan that catapults her into a nervy love triangle with John and Georgette, intertwining their lives and connecting them in surprising and humorous new ways. MAGGIE’S PLAN is a sweet, sophisticated and funny exploration of the unexpected complexities of modern romance, mixing heart and humor in a story of the delightful variability of relationships over the course of time.

Q&A with the creators of DARK HORSE

May 20, 2016

Recently, the Angelika Film Center in NYC had the honor of hosting a Q&A with the filmmaker and subjects of DARK HORSE. The Sundance Film Festival Audience Award winning documentary tells the story of an inspirational group of friends who decide to breed themselves a racehorse. Despite their meager setting in a Wales mining village, the foal grows into an unlikely champion, beating the finest thoroughbreds in the land. After suffering a near fatal accident, the foal makes a remarkable recovery and, ultimately, returns to the racetrack, providing endless inspiration and hope for the owners who nursed him back to health.

Director Louise Osmond, and the film’s subjects Jan and Brian Vokes, came all the way across the pond to share the incredible and true story of Dream Alliance and the obstacles they overcame to tell it.

“We’ve had difficult times but I have to say, all the Syndicate members at the worst time with the horse – every one of them, even though some of them were struggling to feed their children, gave up their prize money for that horse to have his operation. So it’s been a fantastic journey.” – Jan Vokes”

DARK HORSE opens at Angelika Dallas this Friday!

THEEB – Interview w/ Director Naji Abu Nowar

February 22, 2016

The directorial debut film from Naji Abu Nowar, THEEB is one of the five films nominated for the 2016 Academy Awards Best Foreign Lanuage Film. Gadi Elkon of seligfilmnews.com spoke with Naji about the film, his connetion to the Bedouin community, the beauty of Jordan and much more.

Seligfilmnews.com: The film has garnered awards for Direction, Cinematography, and the screenplay writing.  Can you tell us about building such a talented team around your debut feature and how each member of the team is getting wonderful recognition for y’all’s incredible work on the film?  In particular working with your Co-Writer – Bassel Ghandour, DP – Wolfgang Thaler & editor Rupert Lloyd.  I also was blown away by the subtle yet moving score by Jerry Lane!

Naji Abu Nowar:  Filmmaking is a collaborative art. Despite the usual focus on the Director or Actor/Star to market the film, the process is very much a team sport. Like any successful team you need a breadth and depth to your squad. You need star established players like the amazing Wolfgang Thaler and you need young rookies with something to prove like the incredible Jerry Lane. They all contribute their own unique talents to this seemingly magical process. I take casting every member of the crew as seriously as I take casting the actors. To my mind that is a key factor in making a successful film. The creative process of working with such talented people is the main reason why I love making films, rather than just being a film fan. Click through to read the full interview.

THEEB is now playing at the Angelika Dallas.
