Spotlight on HUMAN FLOW – filmmaker Q&A with Ai Weiwei

October 17, 2017

Renowned filmmaker Ai Weiwei brings to the forefront the worldwide refugee crisis with his new film HUMAN FLOW, which has been deemed by the Hollywood Reporter as “engrossing” and “visually stunning.” After its award-winning premiere at the Venice Film Festival, HUMAN FLOW has received resounding critical acclaim.

Here’s a snapshot of what the critics are saying:

“A towering achievement from one of the world’s foremost champions of human rights.” -RogerEbert.com

“This is angry, thoughtful, straightforward activist journalism: blunt, simple and impossible to ignore.” -TimeOut

“Human Flow stuns: It reveals the full breadth of a catastrophe that we might usually think of as piecemeal.” -Village Voice

Alongside its opening at Angelika New York, we were honored to host a Q&A with filmmaker Ai Weiwei.22499281_10155427998430589_1128024067018480808_o22520064_10155427998990589_110075403004821095_oClick here to view the full photo album from the Q&A!

wristAbout the film:
In an epic film journey led by the internationally renowned artist Ai Weiwei, HUMAN FLOW gives a powerful visual expression to this massive human migration. The documentary elucidates both the staggering scale of the refugee crisis and its profoundly personal human impact. Captured over the course of a year amid 23 countries, the film follows a chain of urgent human stories that stretches across the globe, and acts as a witness to its subjects and their desperate search for safety, shelter and justice; from the haunting lure of lives left behind to the unknown potential of the future. This visceral work of cinema is a testament to the unassailable human spirit and poses one of the questions that will define this century: Will our global society emerge from fear, isolation, and self-interest and choose a path of openness, freedom, and respect for humanity?

This stunning, and no-doubt timely film is now playing at the Angelika New York, and opens Friday 10/20 on Manhattan’s Upper East Side at East 86th Street Cinema. It also opens at Angelika Dallas and Angelika Plano on Friday 10/20, and 10/27 at Angelika Carmel Mountain.

[CLOSED] Enter to win! IT FOLLOWS autographed poster + soundtrack

March 13, 2015

One of the most buzzed-about films of last year’s festival circuit, IT FOLLOWS is a terrifying new take on the teen horror genre. After a seemingly innocent sexual encounter leaves 19-year-old Jay plagued by nightmarish visions, she can’t shake the sensation that someone, or something, is following her. Jay must somehow escape the unknown horrors that are only a few steps behind. With a riveting performance from up-and-comer Maika Monroe (LABOR DAY) and a strikingly ominous electronic score by Disasterpeace, IT FOLLOWS is an exciting follow up to filmmaker David Robert Mitchell’s THE MYTH OF THE AMERICAN SLEEPOVER.

Every great horror flick has a great soundtrack, and IT FOLLOWS is no different. The soundtrack from Disasterpeace is reminiscent of the music from the films of John Carpenter, with a modern twist.

Sign up here for a chance to win a prize pack including an official IT FOLLOWS movie poster autographed by writer/director David Robert Mitchell and the original motion picture soundtrack by Disasterpeace.

IT FOLLOWS is now playing at the Angelika New York.

[CLOSED] Angelika NYC: Enter to win a Mark Landis forgery + ART and CRAFT QandAs

Sunday 9/21 @ 7:10PM – Jennifer Grausman, Sam Cullman, and Mark Becker in attendance

About the film:
Oscar nominee Sam Cullman delivers a delicately balanced documentary with ART AND CRAFT, a look at one of the most prolific art forgers in America. After decades of conning the art industry with an impressive body of work in a wide range of styles – most of which was then donated to institutions across the United State – Mark Landis is exposed by a tenacious registrar from Cincinnati. Amid questions of motive, diagnosed schizophrenia, and a chorus of museum professionals clamoring for him to stop, this cat-and-mouse caper emerges an intimate story of obsession and the universal need for community, appreciation, and purpose.

ART & CRAFT is now playing at the Angelika New York.
