Original Sailor Moon Movie Finally Coming to Theatres

December 20, 2016

Yes! Over fifteen years after its initial home video American release, Sailor Moon R: The Movie will have a limited theatrical run.  It will run completely uncut for the first time in America. The series, first released in Japan in 1991, Sailor Moon helped popularize the Magical Girl genre, thus inspiring many more manga and anime series to come.

The film, first released to VHS in 2000 in America, has been re-mastered and features updated voices from the likes of Stephanie Sheh (Orihime Inoue, Bleach), Christina Vee (Homura Akemi, Puella Magi Madoka Magika), Cherami Leigh (Asuna Yuki, Sword Art Online), and the legendary Johnny Yong Bosch. Additionally, it will feature a fifteen minute short film that was present in the Japanese release, but absent in the original American release.

SAILOR MOON R opens January 9th, 2017.

Tickets are on sale at Angelika Film Center Carmel Mountain, Angelika Film Center Dallas, Angelika Film Center Mosaic, Angelika Film Center Plano, and Angelika Pop-Up.

Hayao Miyazaki Comes Out of Retirement (Again)

December 11, 2016

Good news Studio Ghibli fans! Three years after announcing his retirement, Miyazaki-san has announced that he is coming back for “one last film.”  According to Anime News Network (ANN), the legendary anime filmmaker is set to direct BORO THE CATERPILLAR, a film that has reportedly been in development-hell for the past twenty years.  Miyazaki broke the news himself during a Japanese TV special about him, claiming that a short version of the film made for the Ghibli Museum left him dissatisfied.  As many fans know, this is not the first time the acclaimed director has come back for “one last film.”  In fact, he has been in and out of retirement since his film PRINCESS MONONOKE (1998), and has since taken the world by storm.  With his new shift towards manga illustration, is this truly Miyazaki-san’s last film as he claims?  BORO THE CATERPILLAR is anticipated to be completed sometime in 2019.

In the meantime, be sure to check out another Miyazaki film, OCEAN WAVES, opening January 17. The film has been remastered in 4K and we’ll be presenting the US premiere along with the North American premiere of a never before seen short film called GHIBLIES EPISODE 2.

Tickets for OCEAN WAVES are on sale now at Angelika Pop-Up, Angelika Film Center Dallas, Angelika Film Center Plano, Angelika Film Center Carmel Mountain, Angelika Film Center Mosaic.
