An other-worldly fairy-tale, a true story that makes journalism seem as epic a career as a superhero, a subversive figure skating scandal, and a circus legend… These are just some of the premises behind this year’s Golden Globe nominated films.

Topping the nominations was Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water, with a whopping seven nominations including Best Picture, Best Actress (Sally Hawkins), Best Director (del Toro), and Best Original Screenplay. Octavia Spencer, who received a Best Supporting Actress nomination, speaks about her role in the film here:

Another top nominee is Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri– with six nominations including Best Picture, Best Actress (Frances McDormand), Best Director and Best Screenplay.

Tied with six nominations of its own is Steven Spielberg’s upcoming film The Post, which received nods for dream-team lead duo Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks, as well as a Best Director nomination for Spielberg, and a Best Picture nomination. With its timely premise and legendary leads, this one will certainly be at the top of our must-see list this season!

Another nomination-topper is Lady Bird, with nominations for all three women at its helm: Director Greta Gerwig and actors Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf, as well as a Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy nomination. This is certainly no surprise, as the critical acclaim just keeps pouring in!

Upcoming Christmas releases The Greatest Showman and All the Money in the World nabbed three nods, and summer blockbuster Dunkirk followed suit, as did I, Tonya and Call Me By Your Name.

I, Tonya was featured in our recent Watchlist: Female-driven Academy Front-Runners, as was Lady Bird, Shape of Water and Three Billboards. Also featured there is A Fantastic Woman, who earned a well deserved Best Motion Picture – Foreign Language nomination. Similarly, Call Me By Your Name topped our Watchlist – Love, War and a Tragicomic Legend feature. The Disaster Artist, also featured there, received a Best Actor nomination for James Franco, who also directed and produced the film.
