What can I do to keep Angelika Film Center at Bayou Place?
August 30th, 2010 at 10:02 am
Really sad…we went there as often as we could. Might it re-open in another place in Houston? Are any of the decor items being sold off?

So sad to hear of the Houston film center’s closing. Angelika was an integral part of the rebirth of the old convention center (now Bayou Place) and will be missed. Hopefully, Angelika can find a new home in Houston — and soon!

This wasn’t the one decent cinema in Houston—don’t forget about Landmark River Oaks!—but it was one of the two. A sad development. I hope that Angelika Houston can live on in another location, perhaps one closer to its patrons. (I selfishly propose Montrose, the Heights, or West U.)

I am so disappointed to hear of the Angelika Theatre closing. It is the ultimate movie theatre in Houston. Houston definiely needs a theatre that features the best in independent, foreign, and specialty films.
What can we the viewing public do to impact the return of Angelika to Houston?

I’m a repeat patron since the Bayou Place opening in 1997. What can be done to save our Angelika?
August 30th, 2010 at 1:37 pm
I am crushed! My girls and I always loved going there. Bring it back!
August 30th, 2010 at 2:29 pm
This is a shame! I was suppose to go there this week to see a movie with some friends. It was a nice place - seats were comfortable. I was sorry when they closed that little restaurant but it was still a nice place to go. What a shame we couldn’t support this establishment..

This is so depressing. There’s absolutely no reason for a city our size not to be able to support an indie/foreign film venue like Angelika.
Would staging a riot help bring back Angelika?? I say that in jest…. mostly.

I’m very disappointed. We just moved back to Houston in October and one of my greatest pleasures was now being able to see foreign and independent films at the Angelika. I’m so glad we did not put off seeing “Farewell” and “The Concert,” both of which we thoroughly enjoyed. I hope that another site will be found for this theatre.

First Greenway and now Angelika, so sorry to lose another fine venue showing foreign and independent films. I hope that it reopens very soon. The Meyer Park Theatre which closed down a while back might be a good option if available. It had several screens, 14 if I remember correctly. It is not inside the loop but very close. Just a thought.

oh, that’s really sad. angelika was my favorite movie theater in houston. what a loss.
August 30th, 2010 at 5:09 pm
WHY ON EARTH would it close?!? It was a premiere destination for independent film lovers. Will you just be moving to a different location in the metro? I hope so!
August 30th, 2010 at 5:12 pm
How depressing.

This is a great loss for Houston and for all of us who love intelligent movies. Please try to come back with a new location so we may enjoy your great selections for a long time. There is plenty of space in malls here, I will follow you anywhere in Houston! Do not give up!

Very sad. It was a great movie going experience and the ONLY reason I had to go to Bayou Place. Some of the best movies I have ever seen were at the Angelika. I live in the burbs and passed up a lot of theaters to see the quality films.

It is sad to see Angelika closed. I was there every other week.
I propose Angelika to reopen at the new Eado Promenade, which will be built behind the George R. Brown:

If you really want to help then join my facebook community page, “Relocate Houston Angelika Film Center.” If we get enough people interested in this idea then maybe we can get things started.

SHOW YOUR SUPPORT ON FACEBOOK AT “SAVE HOUSTON ANGELIKA FILM CENTER.” If we do nothing, then that is exactly what will happen, nothing. If we at least try then maybe we can make something happen. This is ridiculous: WE ARE THE 4TH LARGEST CITY IN THE US AND WE CAN’T KEEP A DECENT ARTHOUSE THEATRE OPEN?

My wife and I loved attending the Angelika. Please reopen in Houston. There is a 90k sq ft empty building (on light rail) in Midtown near my house that would be cool for you to revitalize… 2850 Fannin

All I can say it really hurts me to see Angelika go like this! Especially when Houston needs venues like this. I have been going to Angelika since it’s opening, and the news hit me like a ton of bricks! I didn’t think this would be possible… Very sad
THANK YOU FOR 13 YEARS OF WONDERFUL MOVIES!

WHAT A LOSS!!! I just found out…I was planning to go there this weekend. It was already a shame that a city this big had only two indie/foreign cinema theaters, now we’re losing the Angelika?? depressing news… Houstonians deserve a place to cultivate their minds and see the world through the eyes of fine movie makers!
August 31st, 2010 at 1:12 pm
Where will we go for crybaby matinee?? This is the only way a lot of moms in this city can go see a decent movie and not worry about upsetting everyone around them! Please find a new location! We love you Angelika theater
August 31st, 2010 at 1:44 pm
What can we do to get the Angelika in a new place in Houston? We need this theater!!
Bayou Place Ltd Partnership, please know that you have just lost my family’s business to any of your other locations for such a short-sited act. Angelika was the best theater in Houston. I am thoroughly disappointed and disgusted.

Absolutely tragic. It’s shocking that a city of Houston’s magnitude cannot maintain independent theaters and various other local establishments, i.e. bookstores, music stores/venues etc. I’ve been a resident of Montrose for 10+ years and like any other neighborhood, it’s in a period of rapid flux and transition but I can’t say that I’m pleased with it’s “progression” or seeming trajectory. I really really really hope Angelika’s parent company will look into relocating this gem.
August 31st, 2010 at 2:35 pm
This is a disgrace for a city like Houston. I have enjoyed the Angelika since it opened here and have attended regularly. We pretend to be a city that appreciates the arts and we cannot support a theater without which we would miss so many fine films? Please find a way to continue in Houston, in the downtown, if possible. Let your loyal customers know what, if anything, we can do to help.
August 31st, 2010 at 5:09 pm
The closing of the Houston location was sudden, but not entirely surprising. The landlord (Bayou Place) had been doing a terrible job of keeping things up. Maybe there is a problem with Bayou Place. If Angelika were on Houston’s west side (Montrose, West University, Galleria area, even as far as Memorial Villages area) it would probably do better. Plus, 8 screens is a lot to keep up; 4-5 would probably be sufficient. There is also an elephant in the room no one wants to acknowledge, that the once vibrant and classy nightlife scene in downtown Houston has turned too much to the “hip-hop” crowd in recent years, and that may have had an effect (since Angelika was located smack in downtown).
August 31st, 2010 at 5:20 pm
If they relocate, please place in an accessible location. Being in downtown is a deterrent for many movie goers. I’ve been there 3 times. I would have went more if I didn’t have to go into downtown.
August 31st, 2010 at 6:01 pm
I see a lot of films, and I saw more of them at the Angelika than anywhere else. The location could not be beat either, just zip in off the freeway, usually even park on one of the adjacent streets. On my list for this week were Farewell and Girl Who Played W/ Fire - alas I will not see these two excellent films in a theater now. And most likely many more they would have shown that no one else will. I hope they can find another venue here and soon! ;~(

I was speechless upon hearing that Houston’s most comfortable indie-foreign film theater has closed. We supported the Angelika regularly especially during the summer months when you wanted to get away from all the incredibly rude kids who tend to frequent the cinema during that time. I find it so difficult to believe that the 4th largest city in the country does not feel it important to have a current, up-to-date venue that shows indie/foreign films. I refuse to go to the River Oaks Theater because it is far too uncomfortable. Angelika, you will be missed……

This is a terrible loss for Houston. Is there any chance of relocating? Is there anything your regulars can do to help?
September 7th, 2010 at 1:41 pm
Just shocked… but really hope that the Angelika doesn’t permanently leave Houston
September 23rd, 2010 at 7:17 pm
Very sad. We loved going to Angelica and hope it will reopen again. Is there anything we can do to help?

How about the old Alabama Theater? Since Barnes and Noble bought the Book Stop and moved it to river oaks, the grand old art deco theater is available. It would be a fantastic alternative and a reincarnation for both entities. Still in neartown and a perfect venue for art and indie movies.
