It’s that time of year again - Academy Award® season! The 2010 nominations arrived today with a few surprises and a few sure bets. Nominations for the 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards were announced this week, with most of the excitement focused on Jason Reitman’s UP IN THE AIR (which already nabbed the NBR’s approval as the Best Film of 2009). Competing with festival favorite PRECIOUS and James Cameron’s upcoming AVATAR, UP IN THE AIR is up for Best Drama, among other awards.

The first film in history to win Audience Awards at both Sundance and the Toronto International Film Festival, PRECIOUS (presented by Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry), is a poignant, hopeful story based on the novel Push by Sapphire. Generating tremendous Oscar buzz, this Lee Daniels film stars newcomer ‘Gabby’ Sidibe as Precious - an overweight, illiterate teen, pregnant with her second child. Living in Harlem in the late 80’s with her abusive mother (Sundance Special Jury Prize winner Mo’Nique), Precious accepts a slot at an alternative school and, through education, seeks the hope and change she desperately needs. PRECIOUS also features Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz and Paula Patton (DÉJÀVU).
Local Barbershop Quartets “Ringside” and “Initial Sound” to perform prior to AMERICAN HARMONY!
On Friday, August 21 and Saturday, August 22 prior to the 7:20 showtimes of AMERICAN HARMONY, local Houston barbershop quartets “Ringside” and “Initial Sound” will sing a few songs for the guests at the Angelika. “Ringside” will be the featured performers on Friday and “Initial Sound” will sing on Saturday. Both quartets will be there to answer questions and sing a few tunes in the lobby at 6:50pm and will do a short performance in advance of the 7:20pm showtime for the patrons of AMERICAN HARMONY.
