Cheryl Boone Issacs, Academy President, joined by a team of our favorite Hollywood stars, announced the Oscar nominees this morning for the 89th annual awards via a live-streamed event.
Today was a day in movie-making history for many reasons. The much talked about musical LA LA LAND started on a high-note, receiving nominations in 14 categories. This ties with the most Oscar-nominated film in history, James Cameron’s Titanic. We will see if they close the curtain in February with a record-winning Oscar run.
Today’s nominations also marked a historic year for diversity with a record six black actors nominated. In addition, Viola Davis is now the first black women to receive three Oscar nominations. We were introduced to MOONLIGHT, a tender coming of age tale which left a twinkle in our eye; FENCES, a play turned film that mixed art with heart; HIDDEN FIGURES, a powerful story that launched us into the early 1960s following a cast of African American mathematicians at NASA; and LOVING, a story of an interracial couple who falls in love and fights for love in a time of segregation. Also recognized was Dev Patel, a British actor of Indian descent, who received a nomination for his supporting performance in the tenacious LION. Many other noticeable categories also recognized people of color.

Unsurprisingly, Meryl Streep still reigns as Oscar Queen, receiving her 20th Oscar nomination for FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS (Katharine Hepburn & Jack Nicholson are the next most-nominated with 12 Oscar nods each).
Finally, streaming on the sea to the future was MANCHESTER BY THE SEA. Amazon Studios made Oscar History as the first streaming service to earn a Best Picture nomination. Could this be the future?
