"A roller coaster of fabulousness and folly."

“Consistently engrossing… a roller coaster of fabulousness and folly.” -The Hollywood Reporter

Roy Halston Frowick lived what many would call the American dream. A fashion designer, publicly known simply by the name Halston, he owned the 1970s through his iconic, yet simplistic, looks.

Writer/Director Frédéric Tcheng (DIOR AND I, VALENTINO: THE LAST EMPEROR) and Halston’s Niece, Lesley Frowick, sat down with the Angelika Film Center and the USA Film Festival for an intimate Q&A following a screening of the documentary film, HALSTON.

Frowick reminisces about what it was like to exist within the stratosphere around her uncle, and how overwhelming it was from the beginning of his career to its bitter end. Halston’s four decade long career is highlighted in iconic pieces  including First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy’s inaugural hat, but a corporate takeover in the 1980s Wall Street era ultimately proved devastating for him.

They discuss the relationship between Charles James and Halston – a father/son meets master/student relationship – which helped Halston blossom into the designer he was, and gave him the creative gusto to branch out and experiment with his designs. Tcheng discusses the filmmaking process, and the arduous research and sorting through archival footage and documents which hadn’t seen the light of day in more than 30 years, all of which helped define and expand the image of Halston’s life and work.

About the film:

“HALSTON is thrilling stuff for fashion nerds, as well as a poignant character study of a misfit ultimately undone by his excessive hunger to prove himself,” raves Variety. Prodigiously talented, Halston reigned over fashion in the 1970s and became a household name. But everything changed in the Wall Street era. With his empire under threat, Halston took the biggest gamble of his life. From director/writer Frédéric Tcheng (DIOR AND I), and featuring Joel Schumacher, Liza Minnelli, Marisa Berenson, Naeem Khan and Pat Cleveland.
